Scrap Drive
People who enjoy sleeping late on the morning have lately had little chance to snooze a while longer on non-school days. The school children have gone all out for paper collection. Doorbells ring early Saturday morning. Donning robe and slippers one rushes to the door to be confronted by a smiling face inquiring "ANY PAPER?" Morning and noon, loads can be seen proceeding schoolward. Some are carried in arms which seem hardly strong enough for the big piles. The more fortunate drag their collections along in wagons often with several helpers pushing and giving advice. Paper collection is carried on in all the Norwalk schools, and although Rowayton is one of the smaller ones, it has been second in both March and April with a total of 30,850 lbs. for the two months. Warren Johnson is kept busy weighing the paper and the teachers keep records for each child. Service stripes are awarded so many youngsters have both sleeves filled and are now adding their stripes to the back of their jackets. Yes, the Rowayton kids are behind the paper salvage drive one thousand percent and are making a splendid contribution toward the war effort.
